Reproductive performance of 2-year-old Hereford and Angus heifers as influenced by pre- and post-calving energy intake.

چکیده
p REPARTUM and post-partum energy intake has been shown to influence reproductive performance of beef cows (Wiltbank et al., 1962, 1964). A low level of energy before calving was shown to delay onset of estrus following calving. Marked differences in conception rate were noted in cows on varying levels of energy following calving. Conception rate was decreased by low levels of energy after calving while cows which were full fed after calving had high conception rates. The results of these experiments were promising enough that further investigation seemed warranted. The experiment reported here was designed to determine the effects of two precalving and three post-calving levels of estimated digestible energy intake upon the reproductive performance of 2-yr.-old Hereford and Angus heifers nursing their first calves.

Reproduction and calf performance of Angus-sired and Polled Hereford-sired cows bred to Angus and Brahman bulls for primiparous calving as two- vs three-year-olds.
This 4-yr study was conducted with Angus (A)-sired and Polled Hereford (PH)-sired crossbred heifers that were exposed to either A or medium-frame Brahman (B) bulls from primiparous calvings either as 2- or 3-yr-olds. Each year, heifers were allotted at random within breed composition and age of dam to breeding groups on pasture for an 84-d breeding period that began in late March or early April...
متن کاملEvaluation of reproductive traits in Bos taurus and Bos indicus crossbred heifers: relationship of age at puberty to length of the postpartum interval to estrus.
Records of age at puberty (AAP) and duration of the postpartum interval to estrus (PPI) for heifers calving first at 2 yr of age were used to determine the relationship between the two reproductive traits. The study from which these records were obtained was designed in a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Angus x Hereford (AH; n = 148) and Brahman x Hereford (BH; n = 148) heifers w...
متن کاملGenetic effects for reproductive traits in beef cattle and predicted performance.
Reproductive data were collected on 4,595 cow exposures and subsequent calvings over four generations in a rotational crossbreeding study involving Angus, Brahman, Charolais and Hereford breeds. Direct and maternal additive (Ig and Mg) and nonadditive (Ih and Mh) genetic effects were estimated for calving rate, calf survival, weaning rate, calving assistance and calf birth date. Genetic effects...
متن کاملInfluence of prepartum nutrition on the reproductive performance of beef females and the performance of their progeny.
Two experiments were designed to assess the importance of maternal nutrition in the later stages of gestation on reproductive performance of beef females and on the growth and survival of their calves. In experiment 1, 59 Hereford first-calf heifers were assigned to one of two levels of dietary energy (high [HI which was 100% of the recommended level of prepartum energy or low [L] which was 65%...
متن کاملEFFECT OF GROWTH RATE T H R O U G H 30 M O N T H S ON REPRODUCTIVE PERFORMANCE OF BEEF HEIFERS ~ A. T. Fleck 2, R. R. Schalles and G. H. Kiracofe
The effect of growth rate from birth through 30 months of age on the reproductive performance of Polled Hereford heifers calving as 2-year-olds was examined. Heifers with high gains during the first winter as weanlings had higher breeding efficiency when bred as yearlings, had larger pelvic areas as 2-year-olds, gave birth to larger calves, had less calving difficulty at first parturition and h...
